Matt Bell

Matt leads Global Portfolio & Project Management at AstraZeneca (AZ), reporting directly to the CEO, Pascal Soriot. His function provides pipeline governance, R&D project management, and portfolio management support across company. Matt has also worked with the Senior Executive Team on the development and implementation of the AZ company strategy since 2012. Matt is based in Gaithersburg, an R&D campus with over 3,000 employees, where he is currently Chair of the Site Leadership team.

Prior to his current role, Matt was COO of MedImmune for 6 years. As a member of the MedImmune Leadership Team, he is proud to have led efforts to create award-winning sites and culture including the transformation of Gaithersburg, Cambridge and San Francisco sites. During his tenure, MedImmune delivered four new biologics medicines to patients Fasenra, Imfinzi, Brodalumab, and Lumoxiti. Earlier in his career, Matt worked in strategy consulting at Cambridge Pharma Consultancy (now part of IQVIA) and then at Wyeth R&D from 2003 to 2009.

He is also a Member of the Board and Chair of the Finance Committee at the nationally-recognized Children’s Inn at NIH, a non-profit he has been involved with since 2013 (www.childrensinn.org).

A scientist by education, Matt graduated with a First-Class degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, UK and holds a PhD in Neuroscience. He is married to Bhaval, Partner and Creative Director of a healthcare-focused design agency (www.infograph-ed.com). He has two boys ages 11 and 13 and lives in the Washington DC area.
